“Exultation is the going
Of an inland soul to sea, –
Past the houses, past the headlands,
Into deep eternity!
Bred as we, among the mountains,
Can the sailor understand
The divine intoxication
Of the first league out from land?*

Writing is hard. Writing about my own writing – with the clarity that inspires simplicity — is hard to the point of absurdity. Enter, then, the rescuing angel poet spirit of Emily Dickinson.
As I was over-thinking what to convey of myself the spiritual poet, and what inspires the writing to take the forms it does, I discovered that those lines from Dickinson – with their rolling-ocean rhythm – were quietly repeating in my mind.
As a former newspaper and magazine writer, I appreciate the art of the lead, and Dickinson offers one far better than what I was coming up with. So the point she is helping me get to is this: these writings are my heart’s way of taking to the wide, wide sea of Divine Love within all Life. It is my deepest wish that in these prayers you find honest, unconditionally loving companionship for your own seafaring, as well.
So be it.
